Nitrogen removal wetlands: purpose, location and grants
Updated
Nitrogen removal wetlands are one of the most direct measures for cleaner coastal waters. They come in two variants under the VLP scheme.

Purpose and location
According to Landbrugsstyrelsen (the Danish Agricultural Agency), the purpose is to improve the aquatic environment by reducing nitrogen discharges to fjords and coastal waters. Nitrogen removal wetlands are typically located near the coast and must be situated in a sub-catchment where nitrogen reduction measures are needed.
VKP or KLA
VKP nitrogen removal wetlands are established under track 1, with 80% EU funding and 20% national funding. KLA nitrogen removal wetlands are established under track 2 with national funding and grant commitments issued on a rolling basis.
Who can apply?
Municipalities and Naturstyrelsen (the Danish Nature Agency) can apply for VKP nitrogen removal wetlands. Private landowners and certain foundations can apply for KLA nitrogen removal wetlands.
Documentation
The effect is calculated using SGAV's methods and spreadsheets. Freyra does not calculate the nitrogen reduction effect, but documents the area before and after rewetting using fixed photo points and public data.
Frequently asked questions
Does a nitrogen removal wetland have to be in a specific location?
Yes. It must be situated in a sub-catchment where nitrogen reduction measures are needed. This is determined by the area drawn in MARS.
